Most technical SEO checklists you'll find online are written for beginners: "submit your sitemap," "check your robots.txt," "install an SEO plugin." That's table-stakes stuff. This checklist is different — it covers the 50 technical factors that separate sites that coast on existing authority from sites that systematically outrank competitors. We use this same checklist in our own RankrSEO Technical Audit Framework, and every item here has blocked or suppressed rankings for at least one real client we've worked with.

1. Crawlability & Indexation

  • XML sitemap is submitted and free of errors
  • robots.txt does not block important pages
  • Search Console has no critical crawl errors
  • All important pages return 200 HTTP status
  • Thin or duplicate pages use noindex where appropriate
  • Pagination is handled with rel next/prev or infinite scroll
  • Orphan pages are identified and linked internally
  • Site:domain.com search shows expected indexed pages

2. Site Architecture & URLs

  • URL structure is short and descriptive
  • HTTPS is enforced site-wide
  • Canonical tags are self-referencing or correctly pointing
  • Key pages reachable within 3 clicks from homepage
  • Breadcrumb navigation implemented with schema
  • No parameter-based duplicate content
  • 301 redirects for deleted or moved pages
  • Flat site architecture (important pages not buried)

3. Core Web Vitals & Performance

  • LCP under 2.5 seconds
  • INP under 200 milliseconds
  • CLS under 0.1
  • First Contentful Paint under 1.8 seconds
  • Time to Interactive under 3.8 seconds
  • Images served in modern formats (WebP, AVIF)
  • Lazy loading implemented for below-fold images
  • CSS and JavaScript are minified
  • Render-blocking resources are deferred
  • CDN is configured for static assets

4. Mobile Optimization

  • Viewport meta tag is correctly set
  • Tap targets are 48px minimum
  • Content width matches device width
  • Font sizes are readable without zoom
  • Mobile page speed is 80+ (PageSpeed Insights)
  • No intrusive interstitials on mobile
  • Mobile and desktop content parity

5. Structured Data & Schema

  • Organization schema is present
  • BreadcrumbList schema implemented
  • Article schema on blog posts
  • FAQ schema on FAQ content
  • LocalBusiness schema (if applicable)
  • Review schema on product/review pages
  • JSON-LD format used site-wide
  • No schema errors in Search Console

6. Security & Server

  • SSL certificate is valid and up to date
  • Server response time under 200ms
  • HSTS header is configured
  • Custom 404 page is helpful and on-brand
  • No mixed content (HTTP/HTTPS mix)
  • Security headers (X-Frame-Options, X-Content-Type-Options)
  • Database and CMS are up to date
